Museum uses Wikitude tech to augment its building

AR digitally transforms museum with building tracking

Museum uses augmented reality to show exhibition information using the building façade.

THE COMPANY

The mumok is a museum of modern art located in the Museumsquartier in Vienna, Austria. Its striking dark grey cuboid building structure, clad in basalt stone, houses an unusual collection featuring important works from Classic Modernism, Pop Art, Fluxus, Viennese Actionism, present-day film, and media art.

THE GOAL

  • Innovatively inform visitors about museum exhibitions

With the intention of attracting new museum visitors and informing frequent museum-goers, the developers wanted to surpass the limits of the physical world by attaching interactive AR content directly to the building structure itself.

THE SOLUTION

AR app: mumokAR [ Google PlayApp Store ]

mumokAR is a mixed reality app that lets users experience and interact with the transformation of the main museum building.

During this process, the building transforms in a gigantic urban stage and several sequences playfully reveal museum-related content and information regarding existing and upcoming exhibitions. Interaction through tapping on moving objects further reveals surprises to the users.

THE AR APP DEVELOPER

Artefact is a mixed reality studio telling stories in augmented reality and was founded in 2019, with the goal of creating unique interactive environments and interfaces for clients through custom apps. The company has been pioneering the use and implementation of augmented reality within urban environments since 2015.

THE AR TECHNOLOGY

This AR feature is used for detecting, tracking and digitally augmenting large scale 3D objects – ideal for building tracking, products, industrial machinery, historical monuments, art pieces, façades, architectural constructions, and more.

Why Wikitude ?

“With the company’s architectural background our desire is to bring augmented reality into the urban environment. We are excited about the possibility that every built object has its own digital reality. With that in mind we don’t want to be limited by physical scale (or small object trackers). Luckily, Wikitude offers Scene Tracking, a unique technology that allows us to take these first steps into a new and exciting mixed reality.”
