World of the Week: Last.fm

Find the hottest concerts and events around you with Wikitude and Last.fm

Summer has officially kicked off, and that can only mean one thing: time to step out and enjoy the great weather, and great music! While concerts in winter, spring, and fall are never a bad thing, there’s just something special about seeing your favorite band(s) performing under an open sky, a warmth in the air, and a cold and tasty beverage in your hand.

Depending upon your geographic area, the live music choices can be overwhelming. From rock to reggae, country to classical, summer is the prime time for acts to take to the road and delight audiences. With so many acts flying around, how do you pick which ones to jump on, and are you really sure that you’ve got the entire concert schedule down in your area? Or better yet, what would be better than seeing one of your favorite acts in a new city while on vacation? Memories for a lifetime.

As you can imagine, the Last.fm world within Wikitude is one of our personal favorites. Whether it’s Christian’s penchant for Irish folk music, or Phil’s love of heavily distorted guitars and basses, chances are, there’s something happening around them that Last.fm and Wikitude make them aware of.

The Last.fm world can be found in the “Fun and Cool” category within the Wikitude app, and uses location based data provided by Last.fm to provide you with a full listing of just about everything musical happening around you. Once accessed, a 360 degree sweep will show you not only which bands, DJs, or Orchestra’s that are playing around you, but also provides detailed information about the location, time the group is scheduled to take the stage, and a link to the Last.fm event page.

And of course, as with any Wikitude entry, a quick tap on the “Bring me there” icon will provide you with turn-by-turn directions to the venue. Likewise, if you’ve got a lot of musical action happening around you, tapping on the compass icon in the top right corner will open up the rangefinder, allowing you to filter through events in your immediate vicinity.
