Second cousins?

The article is incorrect. Sam Adams was John Adams' FIRST cousin. Not second.

No, first cousins are people who share a grandparent, which John and Samuel did not do. Samuel's grandfather was Captain John Adams (1661-1702); John's grandfather was Joseph Adams (1654-1737). They shared a great-grandfather, Joseph Adams (1626-1694), making them second cousins. Even John Adams sometimes got confused on this point, by conflating the two Josephs (see Papers of John Adams, 1:352). -Kevin Myers 05:54, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
