Together with BBC Active, Dorling Kindersley and Wikitude the Future Technologies Group within Pearson set out to create a prototype for a Augmented Reality phrase book called LangAR. After only two weeks of coding Pearson found themselves with an impressive prototype of a potential new product.

Finding Hotels in Augmented Reality

Back in late summer 2011 the Future Technology group within Pearson reached out to Wikitude and invited them to present their ideas how the Pearson Group can benefit from Augmented Reality technology. After presenting several ideas and concepts together with the agency Digitalsunray, the Future Technology Group was intrigued by the novel approach to learning languages.

Contextual learning using Augmented Reality

LangAR is a phrasebook using Augmented Reality to find the right phrases in the right context more easily. Naturally, you pick up phrases and vocabulary of a certain language much easier when being abroad in the country where this language is spoken. LangAR applied this idea to an Augmented Reality app, where the app is converting your bakery at home into a panadería. Additionally, LangAR provides you with the most common phrases for this specific place. LangAR not only helps you learning a language, but also comes in handy when actually being abroad.

Swift success in prototyping

The Future Technology Group within Pearson consists of a diverse team with professionals from across the Pearson Group. One of the main benefits of using the ARchitect engine to build the prototype was that the ARchitect engine is based on standardized web technologies including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The Future Technology Group was able to work on an AR prototype on their own as their in-house developer already had the required skill-set i.e creating web pages and being familiar with JavaScript. Traditionally, development of mobile apps requires the additional need to source a dedicated iOS or Android developer.
