Wikitude 4.0 – Now Live for Symbian 3rd and 5th Edition

Salzburg, April 2nd, 2010. The free Augmented Realiy (AR)-browser Wikitude 4.0 is now made available for a plethora of Symbian phones. Since Nokia’s operating system Symbian is supported back to its 3rd generation, for the first time phones without a touchscreen are capable of using Augmented Reality technology. A full list of all supported devices is available at http://www.mobilizy.com/desuppported-devices-ensuppported-devices

„Until today Augmented Reality was only available for users with touchscreen capable smartphones. This is about to change with our Wikitude 4.0 version for Symbian phones“, says Martin Lechner, CTO of Mobilizy at last week’s CTIA conference in Las Vegas. „The challenge was to keep the navigation simple and self-declaring even without the availability of a touchscreen. That’s what we’ve accomplished.“

Wikitude 4.0 displays geocoded information from more than 200 various „worlds“ (from services such as Flickr, Qype, Wikipedia, YouTube, etc.) in the phone’s camera view. Users are able to configure those „worlds“ by themselves and can create additional Augmented Reality „worlds“ without any programming knowledge.

About Wikitude
Wikitude determine’s the iPhones current location via GPS and thereafter merges the real world with a virtual layer. Once the iPhone is being pointed at a certain spot, a layer of additional information about real-world objects, overlays the iPhone’s camera view. Thus a user pointing an iPhone towards Vienna Stephansdom get’s a Wikipedia entry about the building.

Please read the following FAQs if you encounter any problems with Wikitude on your device:

  • Wikitude does not start when selecting it in the menu.

    This problem might be due to missing Qt libraries on which Wikitude depends. These libraries are copied to the device during installation. If for any reason this failed Wikitude will not be able to run.

    Solution:
    Check if all required files have been installed. To do so go to the Application Manager and check if the list inlcudes following entries:

    Open C LIBSSL Common
    Open C LIBSSL Patch
    PIPS Installer
    Qt
    Standard C++ library Common
    Standard C++ library
    Symbian OS PIPS Upgrade

    Additinally for 3rd Edition devices (e.g. E72, N86 8MP, …)
    Open C LIBZ Support Files

    Additionally for 5th Edition devices (N97, N97 mini)
    Upgrade for OpenC LIBZ Support Files

    If anything is missing please make sure there is enough free space (at least 8 MB) on drive C: and reinstall Wikitude. While you can choose to install Wikitude on any drive the libraries will always be copied to C:. We are well aware that space on C: is limited for a lot of Symbian devices, but this is a technical limitations we cannot do anything about.

  • Selecting Wikitude in the menu reboots the phone.

    This problem is a bit tricky and has to do with a wrong version of a specific library. If you are not interested in the technical background jump right to the solution. The Qt libraries used by Wikitude are built on top of Open C version 1.6. It seems that the Qt libraries are not compatible with a certain build of the newer version 1.7 which will provoke a crash and a phone reboot.

    Solution:
    Go to the Application Manager and check following entries:

    Open C LIBSSL Common
    Open C LIBSSL Patch
    PIPS Installer
    Standard C++ library Common
    Standard C++ library
    Symbian OS PIPS Upgrade

    Additinally for 3rd Edition devices (e.g. E72, N86 8MP, …)
    Open C LIBZ Support Files

    Additionally for 5th Edition devices (N97, N97 mini)
    Upgrade for OpenC LIBZ Support Files

    For each entry open the detail (Options -> View details) and check if the version number listed is 1.06. If it is not AND you are experiencing a phone reboot, uninstall those libraries first and reinstall Wikitude.
