This collaborative encyclopedia is growing thanks to the contribution of the internet users. Today, Wikimanche counts more than 6,000 articles and it is the first wiki of a territory in France and 16th worldwide . Now Wikimanche becomes a mine of knowledge accessible to everybody.

In order to spread informations otherwise, we would like to implement an e-tourism project for la Manche county. Wikitude seems to be an appropriate solution by creating a world dedicated to Wikimanche.

Everyone can easily create Worlds for Wikitude 4 with their own logo and branding. Read to following instructions and hints how to create your own World!

What is a „World“?

Wikitude World Browser provides a whole bunch of new geo-located information-services (so called “Worlds”), like Youtube, Google Local Search, Twitter, Booking.com or Panoramio. Worlds contain points of interest – they need to provide longitude and latitude and can include text, image, link, contact details. For example one Worlds could present all cafes of a city, favorite shops or touristic places of a town. Find some showcases of Worlds here!

The user can search through all available Worlds at the same time!

Here is a Step-by-Step „how to“ to create your own World by uploading a KML file

1. Create Content with Google Earth / choose an existing KML file
2. Export KML file / → 3.
3. Go to wikitude.me
4. Log in with your twitter, facebook, google or yahoo account
5. Select „upload KML“ file
6. Write a short title and description
7. Create a nice marker icon (32px x 32px transparent png) and a Logo (96px x 96px transparent png) which will be shown on the left bottom of the screen
8. Upload your information
9. View your overlay in AR!

Keep your file on your Server

NOTE: The content can also be integrated via a HTTP-Interface: Mobilizy will connect to this search-interface, provided by the company; the content can reside on any server, not necessarily on the Wikitude server.

Add more information to your World

KML, ARML – What is it and what’s the difference?

What is KML?
KML is the Google Earth file format. It describes a place containing coordinates, description, image, links,… Similar to HTML describing Webpages, KML/ARML is describing Augmented Reality content.

How to create a KML File?
Use a KML generator like Google Earth and create your points of interest.

What is ARML and it’s advantage?
ARML is based on KML but it enables to add much more information to your point of interest e.g. Telephone-number, Address, Links, different icons and images.

How can I create an ARML?

With Wikitude, users can see Points of Interest in the surrounding areas. Of particular interest is “Hyper Local Content”, like news, special interest locations etc. Check out more examples already available in Wikitude.

AR Jumping into Tourism – Schladming
Popular tourist areas can also use Wikitude to make information easily available to vacationers. Frequently, although the information is available to guests, it is difficult to locate. The Schladming Region has its own Wikitude World and within that world, guests can locate information about the lodges, mountains, and other destinations directly on their smart phone.

Now on Wikitude you can find the latest local information. You can be standing by a calm bay and just get out your smart phone and find out where to go to find the best winds!

AR can make your daily life much easier by showing relevant local information on your smart phone’s camera view. A team in Switzerland gathered all the available data about public restrooms in the country to create a toilette guide; this even includes details like handicapped accessibility.
The founder of the Swiss Toilette Guide said, “This idea came to mind because AR enables people to easily find their desired locations. Looking for a restroom can be particularly annoying and Wikitude simplified the process.”

How to Create a Wikitude World
Create your own World for Augmented Reality and browse through it with the Wikitude World Browser.
Similar to Websites for the Internet, you can create so-called Worlds for AR and it’s really simple.
Upload a KML file (Google Earth Format) or upload an ARML file (find out more about this file-format at http://www.openarml.org/wikitude4.html). Advantages of ARML format: Add POI details like telephone number, URL and an address to activate a “get me there function.”

Keep your data on your server
Experience shows that every data manager who has spent years gathering and organizing their data wants to protect it. Wikitude appreciates all the hard work and in order to prevent the data from being abused, you can keep their information on your own servers. You can point Wikitude to the address of your files and the application will dynamically pull the data. The application itself does not even save any data to your server!

Dynamic Content
Another advantage of dynamic data is the obvious one. If you have information which changes daily, like events or the daily specials at your restaurant, you can update your Wikitude World more regularly and with ease. New Worlds are popping in on an hourly basis (100+ in a few weeks). We appreciate the work of our content developers and that’s why we present examples of their efforts here on our blog. This time it’s the brand new Hertz World.

Hertz prides itself on technical achievement and innovation. We’ve been moving slowly but surely into the mobile space with a version of our website over a year ago and now a new iPhone and soon to launch Blackberry app. We’ve been watching the Augmented Reality space develop and brainstorming different things we could do. We actually came across Wikitude in the current “Most Innovative Companies” issue of Fast Company. We checked it out and knew it was something we had to be a part of. Within 1 day we had the vast majority of our US locations uploaded into a simple “Hertz World” (more advanced ARML version to follow) and were checking them out in the Wikitude Android application.

Wikitude can really be a key tool for Hertz customers on the go. It is surely a great new way to assist our customers in finding the closest Hertz locations. Even better, sometimes, finding the “location” of a Hertz car rental location is trickier than it might seem. Coming off an airplane, you could certainly follow the airport signs for the Hertz rental cars, but how much nicer it would be for our customers to be able to pop open Wikitude and just scan around for the direction of the actual Hertz location. Sometimes you feel like you’ve followed all the signs but just can’t find what you are looking for. Wikitude to the rescue! Clearly there are many other possibilities for us at Hertz, and we are only scratching the surface of what can be achieved. We look forward to exploring the possibilities for our customers even further in the days ahead!

Content (“Worlds”) in Wikitude

The new version of Wikitude (out now for Android, iPhone coming soon), Wikitude is able to handle arbitrary geo-referenced content sources. Companies can use Wikitude itself to display the content with customized icons in the Augmented Reality camera view. This is completely free of charge.

The content can be integrated via a HTTP-Interface (Mobilizy will connect to this search-interface, provided by the company; the content can reside on any server, not necessarily on the Wikitude server) KML or ARML file (the files can be uploaded via a web interface, or the URL to a KML/ARML file can be registered to be crawled continuously; in either case, the content will be stored on the Wikitude server)
The main advantage of this option is that Wikitude already has a broad user base, so the content will be available to hundreds of thousands of users. Also, as Wikitude supports various platforms (currently Android, iPhone, Symbian), content will automatically be available on all platforms Wikitude supports, without any costs to the company.

Wikitude API

Mobilizy offers an API where developers can easily build their own AR application without reinventing the AR-wheel. The AR code itself is encapsulated in the API, the only thing the developer needs to do is adding the geo-referenced data (Points of Interest) to the API.

The API is currently available for Android and iPhone.

White Label Solution

This is the most customizable and extensive option. Mobilizy re-uses the Wikitude core functionality to build an entirely new application for the company. Nearly everything is customizable (content, splash screen, appearance of camera/map/list screen, enabling/disabling of Wikitude-features etc.), Mobilizy will charge the development costs per man day (for each platform requested), based on the specification of the application developed by the company and Mobilizy.

World: World Heritage (906 POIs)

The World Heritage List includes 890 properties forming part of the cultural and natural heritage which the World Heritage Committee considers as having outstanding universal value. These include 689 cultural, 176 natural and 25 mixed properties in 148 States Parties. As of April 2009, 186 States Parties have ratified the World Heritage Convention.

Specially for hikers in the Austrian Alps this World provides information about nearby huts.

Content Type 1:
You would like to geo-tag your favorite bar or your shopping place?
Go to wikitude.me and geo-tag your favorite points of interest. Log in with your twitter, yahoo, google or facebook account and edit your POI list.
Geo-tagging is only online possible at the moment – a mobile version for geo-tagging your POIs from your mobile phone will be available soon.

Content Type 2:
You already have a whole punch of POIs because you are collecting information with address, pictures and description. For example a museum guide for a rainy day, a list of events in your city or a guide through your favorite places to have a pick-nick.
Upload your list of POIs as KML, the Google Earth format, or ARML with the form on wikitude.me.
(ARML – markup language for augmented reality applications based on KML). The easiest way to generate a KML: Create your POIs with Google Earth and export a KML file!

Content Type 3:
You are a content-service provider who is providing dynamic content such as: news, cinema timetables, event-guides, product-offers e.g.
