Augmented Reality: Coming to an iPhone near you!

Mobilizy, along with our colleagues who are actively researching and developing in the field on mobile augmented reality, have petitioned Apple to let us Augment Reality with the iPhone! (Here is a snippet of the petition found on Games Alfresco.)

“We are a collection of augmented reality (AR) enthusiasts and professionals (from business and academia), who have been working on a multitude of AR apps for the iPhone. These apps are poised to change the way people interact with the real world.”

As a result of this petition, and a recent blog posting by Ross Miller on Engadget we have reason to believe that the iPhone’s augmented reality apps coming with September OS 3.1 launch. According to Mark Milian of the L.A. Times,  Apple told Acrossair, [the] developer of the Nearest Tube train finder, that Acrossair’s application “will be approved for distribution after Apple releases version 3.1 of the iPhone software, which the developer expects will land in early September.”  SOURCE: Technology | Mark Milian | Los Angeles Times

Mobilizy is thrilled at Apple’s decision to allow developers to access the APIs which allow developers to create a shape augmented reality experiences.  We believe this is HUGE step towards mass usage and acceptance of mobile AR scenarios and experiences. We also look forward to launching our WIKITUDE version for iPhone OS later this year!  Kudos Apple!

This is very exciting news for the Augmented Reality Community!
