First Augmented Reality Browser for Symbian

The Salzburg start-up company Mobilizy has developed the first Augmented Reality Browser that is also available on the Nokia Platform Symbian. The Symbian version follows closely along the lines of the existent Wikitude versions for Android and iPhone

Before today, Augmented Reality (AR) applications were reserved for iPhone 3gs and Android users. Now, with the Symbian version of Wikitude, also Nokia N97 and Nokia N97 mini owners can use their mobile phone camera as an Augmented Reality Browser. The application surface has been adapted for Nokia and existing control elements have been integrated to increase the user experience for Nokia customers.

“Everybody is talking about AR at the moment and there is a neck-and-neck race for further developments among the leading companies in the area. We are all the more pleased to be the first to provide our application Wikitude on three platforms,” says Martin Lechner, chief developer and CTO at Mobilizy.

The Augmented Reality view unites reality with computer generated data. The displayed camera picture on the smartphone is enhanced by additional information. This is facilitated by new components in the devices, namely by compass, accelerometer and GPS. The exact position information provided by the new components allows the user to access relevant information about his surroundings. This information is taken from Wikipedia, from the review site Qype or from the user community Wikitude.me.

Wikitude World Browser

One of the world’s first Augmented Reality Browsers has been developed by the Salzburg start-up company Mobilizy. In October 2008, users were able to download the Android version in the Android Market for the first time. In October 2009, Mobilizy released a Wikitude version for the iPhone 3gs that had been released with the required components (compass, accelerometer) only one month earlier. With the Symbian version of Wikitude, Mobilizy supplies three of the chief mobile platforms. The company is already planning further developments. By November 2009, the AR Browser Wikitude had registered about 300.000 downloads worldwide, showing a strong upward trend.

The application can be downloaded for free at the Nokia Store Ovi.
